COOL BUZZ HARMONICA POSSE - DRIVING SAVAGE GROOVE
Yet another right fine disc by Amsterdams infamous roots & blues label Cool Buzz. A collection of harmonica songs, where did that idea come from! A premium selection of some of the finest harp players from the Lowlands, supplemented by two great American harpists, offers a unique contribution to this more than an hour long CD.
All your fave Cool Buzz artists were called upon, even those all stars who hadn't been heard from for way too long, and they all played together in surprising combinations. Especially for Driving Savage Groove 15 songs were recorded at the IJland studio and one more gem, an early live track, was extracted from the Cuban Heels vaults. The result is a broadly varied collection of songs, with the main fat blues vibe being mixed with gospel, garage, country and swing and even latin-rai.
Belgium is represented superbly by Flemish/Wallonian The Harmony Two Tones with their charismatic frontman Renaud Lesire. They open the CD with their original composition Some Things: the tone of Driving Savage Groove is immediately set. Big Dave Reniers (Electric Kings, Dizzy Dave Band) and his experienced band treat us to a flaming instrumental called Slam That Hammer! and he shows his songwriting talent with I Wonder Why. Guy Forsyth wrote a political statement called Guantanamo Bay especially for the occasion and recieved support from Cheb Amraoui, a rising star in the Dutch/Marrocan music scene. With Boyd Small's Four plus One George Reit seeks adventure in an exciting cover of the Motown classic Shame, Shame, Shame. Kim Snelten (The Gabriel Hounds) is back again after Drippin' Honey with three songs, covers of a Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee song and the Junior Wells' band Stomach Ache, and the original One Thin Dime which he co-wrote with Boyd Small. Louisiana Man Hans de Vries recorded a tasteful contribution to the CD with a Ray Charles song and a New Orleans voodoo version of the standard Nobody's Fault But Mine. Pieter v.d. Pluym introduces The Strikes, a young and talented band who make their debut here with the instrumental Ghetto Style. Near the end Big Pete strikes again in The Urban Achievers with their bombastic 12 Gauge Noose. Cuban Heels dusted off the 1998 live recordings from De Metropool in Hengelo and found So Low Down, which highlights their former harp player Ernst Ferkenius. In the studio Richard Koster made a howlin' and scorchin' appearance on Georgia Slop All in all a great collection of harmonica songs!
